Swann is an Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Approved Employer. Swann’s training schemes are designed to offer a clear pathway to ensure passionate individuals reach their potential. We believe that inspiring our apprentices to rise through the company ranks helps to shape a well-rounded individual who understands the full process of a project, from design to manufacturing, and installation. The training is overseen by our senior members of staff who can pass on years of experience through hands-on training.

Trade Apprenticeships

Our Trade Apprentices enter a 3-year programme from Level 2 NVQ to Level 3 NVQ (GCSE to A Level Equivalent) with core rotation throughout the factory including Welding, CNC/Plasma, CNC Press Brake, Gas Cutter, Yard Hand, and joining our CAD team. There is also an optional rotation into our Telecoms Project Management team and Rigger/Installation training. This scheme also comes with the opportunity to transfer to a Degree Apprenticeship (Level 4-6 NVQ) which was most recently taken up by two graduates of the trade scheme, Josh King and Jess Regan.

Degree Apprenticeships

Our Degree Apprenticeship is a 5-year programme from Level 4 NVQ to Level 6 NVQ (Degree Level) learning the key disciplines on offer at Swann: Civil & Structural Engineering, Field & Tower Surveys, Project & Commercial Management, Construction Management, CAD Design, and Production Engineering. All in collaboration with Anglia Ruskin University (BSc Hons Civil Engineering) and Colchester Institute (BEng Hons Engineering).
In the initial 3 years – Apprentices Spend 12 Months on rotation around the business in the following key areas:

1.CAD Team

  • 2D & 3D drawing development
  • Introduction to BIM software
  • Product development
  • CNC machine programming

2.Civil/Structural Design

  • Tower analysis & design
  • Structural design principles
  • Global Design Checks
  • Tower climb surveys
  • Foundation design

3.Project/Commercial Management/Sales & Estimating

  • Programming of resource
  • Estimating & tender/bid support
  • Processing GDCs & front-end-client support
  • Managing site work/installation
  • Organising logistics
  • Managing budgets

In Year 4 onwards, our apprentices specialise in their chosen careers. This can be a Project Manager, CAD Design, and Civil Engineer.

We have seen a huge success in individuals progressing through the business as a result of our training programme. One of these individuals is Josh King, Junior CAD Technician whose journey at Swann began as a Trade Apprentice from Colchester Institute.

In the summer of 2023, Josh attended the ARCO training centre in Stafford. The course was 5 days long and consisted of learning, working at height, rooftop access, RF safety awareness, MATS basic tower climb & rescue, and emergency 1st aid at height. After completing this course Josh was then able to take part in on-site visits, helping survey towers and gain more climbing knowledge.
Since then, Josh enrolled at the University Centre of Colchester Institute working towards a HNC, HND & Degree within Mechanical Engineering, covering many different engineering topics including, further 3D CAD Design, Engineering Maths, Science and Mechanical Principles, Robotics, Thermodynamics, and Managing Engineering Projects.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my 3 and a half years at Swann. The countless amount of opportunities has been incredible, ranging from onsite visits to many different training schemes. The people are also amazing, helping me day to day with everything I’ve struggled with so far. Along the way, I have also learned many different skills making me a more confident engineer.” – Josh King
