With the Swann Engineering Group Apprenticeship Programme now reinstated after a brief Covid-19 lockdown pause, we look forward to developing the next generation of engineers.
The aim of our Apprentice Programme is to provide students from the Colchester Institute the opportunity to develop both the practical and technical skills required to become well rounded, confident, hardworking and skilled manufacturing engineers with the ability to design and create structural steel componentry.
This will be achieved by providing the Apprentices with an approximately 2-3 year programme, full of opportunities to obtain practical experience across a variety of industry disciplines, and will complement our existing Institution of Civil Engineers’ Approved Graduate Training Scheme.
Our Associate Technical Director, Rich Holding, describes some of the key aspects of our flagship programme.
“The Apprentices will spend time learning about all of the stages of the manufacturing process.
Starting at the beginning of the process, the Apprentices will draw steel components using industry specific software packages and then follow its progression through the fabrication phases by applying cutting, folding, drilling and welding techniques that will be cultivated in the Manufacturing Department.
Successful Apprentices will get to experience working on projects from across our wide and diverse product offering, which includes structural steelwork for use in retail and housing developments, Telecommunication structures, and Iconic and bespoke installation projects.
Due to the wide variety of disciplines that the programme will encompass, the Apprentices will develop their written communication and mathematical skills, whilst developing their technical drawing ability by using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software. Additionally, they will learn how to read and implement technical drawings through hands-on experience using our CNC/plasma cutting machine, along with arc-welding and a wide range of additional industry specific fabrication practices.
Throughout the programme the Apprentices will be gaining practical skills, knowledge and experience that will provide the foundation for a successful career in the engineering sector – all whilst receiving an income.
Furthermore, upon completion of the Programme, successful Apprentices will have the opportunity to receive supported learning up to and including degree level”.
