Level 1
The designer uses their experience and knowledge of the structure to state that it is acceptable for an upgrade.

Typically, this is where some form of desktop structural calculation is required to satisfy that the supporting structure is fit for purpose and shall be undertaken by a competent engineer. This may be where a previous level 2 or 3 GDC has been carried out recently on the structure in question and the proposed upgrade is less than the current load of the tower.

Level 2
A computer software model of the tower is used to run a full calculation of the proposed equipment configuration.
The result of a level 2 GDC will be a concise summary of the structure, current and proposed loading, structural pass/failure of structure and foundation noted, and serviceability criteria are given i.e Deflection of structure and its suitability to carry panel antennas and/or transmission dishes and all associated steelwork and feeders.

Level 3
Climbing survey and modelling of structure.
Typically, this will be undertaken for an unknown structure or a tower that requires a climbing survey to determine the load on the structure and/or to validate any earlier strengthening that may have been carried out. The result will be a concise summary of the structure, the current and proposed loading, structural pass/failure of structure and foundation noted, and serviceability criteria are given i.e. Deflection of the structure and its suitability to carry panel antennas and/or transmission dishes and all associated steelwork and feeders.

Swann normally is involved with Level 2 and Level 3 GDC reports, we do carry out Level 1 GDC reports but infrequently as these can be completed by any competent engineer.
Structural Analyses of towers are undertaken to determine if the members of a structure are collectively able to support the existing and the proposed Telecom equipment load within a given factor of safety and remain within the service deflection tolerances imposed. Foundations are also considered against overturning.
The GDC report verifies the structural integrity of the existing/proposed structure. A GDC with a pass result is usually required by the end users prior to any upgrade work being carried out on a structure. This is really the GO document for any upgrade to proceed.
