Large-scale infrastructure projects demand precision, innovation, and absolute reliability, especially when they’re installed over live motorways. The Salford Arch digital advertising structure is a standout example of how Swann Engineering Group combines advanced engineering with practical delivery.

Commissioned by JCDecaux, this landmark project involved the design, fabrication, and installation of the UK’s first fully digital advertising arch spanning a live motorway.

Project Overview

  • Location: M602 near Salford
  • Structure: 65-tonne steel arch, 18m high, spanning 38m
  • Display: 200m² of high-resolution LED advertising screens

Designed to reach over 80,000 motorists daily, the Salford Arch forms part of JCDecaux’s premium roadside advertising portfolio. Its purpose was clear: create a visually striking, revenue-generating gateway into Manchester.

Engineering a First-of-Its-Kind Structure

Delivering a digital advertising arch over a live motorway required a balance between structural strength and lightweight efficiency.

Swann Engineering developed a bespoke steel framework capable of supporting large-format LED screens while withstanding complex environmental forces. Advanced 3D modelling allowed the team to simulate:

  • Wind loading and dynamic gusts
  • Fatigue caused by continuous traffic vibration
  • Structural performance over time

Close coordination with transport and infrastructure stakeholders ensured full compliance with UK traffic management and safety standards.

Precision Fabrication & Pre-Assembly

All components were manufactured in Swann’s 5,000m² UK facility using high-grade structural steel. CNC cutting and robotic welding ensured consistency and accuracy across every connection.

A key innovation in this project was off-site pre-assembly. The entire arch was assembled 1.5km from the final location, allowing engineers to:

  • Verify geometry and alignment
  • Test LED panel integration
  • Confirm cable routing and system compatibility

This proactive approach significantly reduced installation risk and on-site construction time.

Complex Logistics on a Live Motorway

Transporting and installing a 65-tonne structure over an active motorway required meticulous planning.

Swann coordinated closely with highways authorities to execute a controlled overnight closure of the M602. Eight pre-assembled segments, each weighing up to 12 tonnes, were transported using specialist multi-axle vehicles under police escort.

A rolling road closure strategy ensured minimal disruption to traffic while maintaining safety throughout the operation.

Overnight Installation with Zero Disruption

The installation phase was executed within a single overnight window (22:00–05:00), demonstrating exceptional planning and coordination.

Using two 500-tonne cranes, the arch was lifted and installed with an alignment tolerance of just ±10mm across the full 38m span. Within 12 hours, the team completed:

  • Structural installation
  • Protective coatings and finishes
  • LED panel integration

The motorway was fully reopened by 06:00 with no delays or incidents.

Commissioning & Long-Term Performance

Following installation, the digital screens were integrated into JCDecaux’s remote content management system using fibre-optic connectivity.

Comprehensive testing ensured reliability and performance, including:

  • Electrical load testing
  • Environmental sealing (IP66 rating)
  • Brightness calibration for 24/7 visibility

Swann also delivered full project documentation and conducted a six-month post-installation monitoring programme to validate long-term structural integrity.

Key Outcomes

A Landmark Advertising Asset
The Salford Arch quickly became a defining feature of Manchester’s roadside landscape, achieving a 95% occupancy rate within three months.

Outstanding Safety Record
Zero lost-time incidents were recorded across both fabrication and installation phases, with seamless motorway management throughout.

Engineering Innovation
The use of modular pre-assembly reduced on-site installation time by over 40%, setting a new benchmark for similar infrastructure projects.

Strong Return on Investment
The structure generated an estimated £250,000 per year in advertising revenue, enabling the client to recover capital investment within 18 months.

Conclusion

The Salford Arch project demonstrates what’s possible when engineering expertise meets forward-thinking design. From concept to completion, Swann Engineering Group delivered a complex, high-impact infrastructure solution safely, efficiently, and to an exceptional standard.

As demand for digital outdoor advertising continues to grow, projects like this highlight Swann’s ability to deliver innovative, large-scale structures in even the most challenging environments.
