Swann group completed a digital screen, structural installation at Putney Tower. This project formed part of JCDecaux’s D450 national roll-out, with Swann taking on the role of Principal Contractor.
The structure, located on Upper Richmond Road, is 11m in height with powder-coated aluminium cladding that hosts a 7.7m x 4.8m portrait style digital screen. The structure incorporates an access hatch and internal ladder system with Latchway, built to the Client’s specification and certified by Swann.
The site was challenging due to several factors. The Swann installation team had to use a piled foundation due to difficulties with the sub-soil with the location being a former London bomb site and a basement where the foundations were positioned. An infestation of Japanese Knotweed had to be removed and a sloping bank behind the structure caused problems as it was adjoined to another building. The project began with the removal of an existing 96-sheet timber advertising structure.
This project was part of an intensive 10-week programme on site that required intricate planning. The team faced challenges of setting out, as a key requirement of the planning application stipulated the display was a specific dimension from the end of the adjacent gable wall.
The structure was manufactured and installed in two parts with the bottom pedestal installed first and modular pre-loaded screens added thereafter. The LED screens were manufactured off-site following lessons learnt from a previous Swann Design & Build D450 project at East Hill, London. Off-site manufacture delivered cost-efficiencies for the Client and showcases the Swann capability to mix a traditional build with off-site manufacture to provide efficiencies, project fluidity and a reduced on-site programme and cost.
Following the structural installation, the project team redeveloped the grounds with a landscaped finish to make it a more usable, cleaner and safer space. This included fencing, flower beds, grass seeding, pathways and hard standings.
The team successfully overcame the challenges posed by setting out, complex foundations and removal of the previous structures to complete the project on schedule.
